This 2019 season will be Coach Schirman’s 4th year coaching with MVP. Coach Schirman completed his sixth season as head coach of the Briar Cliff women’s volleyball team in 2018 and the 2019 season will be his fourth as the men’s volleyball head coach. Most recently, Schirman took the men’s team to its first-ever NAIA Men’s Volleyball Invite in Des Moines, Iowa where the Cliff went 1-2 in pool play and were 16-6 overall on the season. The Chargers climbed all the way to the third ranked team in the nation during the year. On the women’s side, BC went 18-9 overall, including starting the season 11-0, and were 8-8 in the GPAC.
Schirman was born and raised in Hawaii. He graduated from Punahou High School, in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1986 and was the No. 1 high school volleyball recruit in the nation. Schirman went on to play collegiately at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), where he was the national freshman of the year. The three-time first team all-American was named the national player of the year in 1989. Schirman graduated from UCLA in 1990 and went on to compete as a member of the USA volleyball team from 1990-1993. He then played within the Italian and Greek Professional Indoor Leagues from 1993 until 1995. From 1990-95, as his playing and travel schedule allowed, he served as an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s volleyball programs at UCLA.
